Review: Jung Chang's "Wild Swans"

Continent: Asia
Genre: Memoir, History
Sent in by: Jane Macleod

A timeless classic and well worth a re-read.  I read this book several years ago when it had first been published, and for the passport I decided to re-read it. At first it looked a challenge with just over 700 pages. You cannot put it down.

There are so many elements of the history of China that are covered in this book.  The story starts in 1909 and ends in 1991 when it was first published.  It is told through the stories of 3 generations of women, you live the life of China through the stories of these 3 women.  With Chairman Mao rising to power and the control he held over many of the population you experience a whole new culture and especially the attitudes of women.

It portrays a lifestyle so far removed from your own that you just cannot imagine that this happened – but it did. An unforgettable read for anyone.
