Review: Bruce Parry's "Amazon"

Bruce Parry journals his expedition as BBC presenter for the series “Amazon”. A moving account, beautifully illustrated, of indigenous people and their sometimes changing, sometimes protected, ways of life. From the river’s source in the Andes to its mouth in Brazil, Parry explores the impact outsiders bring and the consequences of demands for coca, oil, gold, hard-wood and beef. Considering the whole deforestation issue, he concludes: “...a few people getting very rich while the world’s resources are being inextricably depleted and the consumers remain largely ignorant of their destructive actions.” The image of a lone brazil tree is unforgettable...
